Meet Lina Rebollo, the Brazil-born, Tokyo-based model you may have spotted walking for Undercover and Sacai.
We talk style and Tokyo living for PINNK Diaries
How long have you been living in Japan?
It’s been four years since I’ve made Japan my base — I live in Tokyo, however if not for the COVID-19 situation I usually travel home to Brazil, and to other countries for work. Since the very first time I came here I felt at home and knew that I wanted to live here for a long time.
What was it that first drew you to Tokyo?
My hometown is the big city of São Paulo, fashion capital of Brazil and oddly, home to the second largest population of Japanese descendants (outside of Japan, obviously).
In São Paulo we even have a “Japan-town”( like other big cities have a “China-town”) called Liberdade and there people speak Japanese and do traditional festivals such as Tanabata and Lunar new year. Besides that kids read Manga and watch Anime as a common thing, and Japanese food has always been present in my life even though my family roots are strictly European.
I think since a young age I’ve developed an interest in the fashion world and Japan in all aspects; their culture, religion, language, pop media…
What do you love most about living in Tokyo?
I think Tokyo is a great place for any young and creative mind to be. The city is so big and complex, you can get inspiration from all corners and find stuff and people from all around the world.
When visiting Tokyo one definitely needs to check out the second hand vintage clothing stores!
Is there anything different about living as a gaijin compared to living as a foreigner in any other country?
I think one thing that also makes me love Tokyo is that as a woman it’s a very safe metropolis, you can dress as you want and walk around in the middle of the night by yourself and you still feel safe at all times.
Believe me, I’ve lived in quite a few places.
I’ve noticed your taste for tailoring and a more androgynous silhouette. Where do you find your sense of style?
My sense of style is derived from the fact that I’m a woman and a model, I’m aways looking out for clothes that enhance my own silhouette in some way; looking leaner, taller and even more masculine — in a sense ‘giving off a stronger aura’. For me, that falls into the realm of tailoring. For me, clothes that fit well are a priority over patterns, colours.
The rest is simply taste, it’s what I consider beautiful at the moment. I’m very influenced by Saint Laurent, although heels and jewellery are not the most practical for running around Tokyo.
Who are your favourite Japanese designers
My favorite designers, both of whom I’ve been lucky enough to work with are Tokyo based: Jun Takahashi of Undercover and Chitose Abe of Sacai are definitely my highlights here.
Every season I can’t wait for Undercover new designs and ideas. Recently I’ve discovered Jun Takahashi’s work as a visual artist which is also very interesting.
